June Newsletter

Summer is almost here!

Please provide your child with a sun hat every day. The sun is strong and hot these days and we need that extra protection. Even if the weather is calling for cloud or rain, this is Nova Scotia and the weather can make a drastic change over a single day.

Please check cubbies and bags

Also with summer almost here, we would ask for all families to check that their child’s extra clothing both fits and is appropriate for the warmer weather. Please label your child’s clothing with their name or initials whenever possible to prevent mix-ups and help staff put items back in the right place!

Happy Birthday to you …

This month we are celebrating with Cairo (June 1)!

Enrollment changes and vacations

Although we only require two weeks’ notice of changes, please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to change your child’s enrollment (part-time to full-time, or vice versa), the date of your school eligible child’s withdrawal, or any vacation time this summer where your child will be absent from Purple Door. This information needs to be put in writing by hand or via email to nbishop@eastlink.ca. Thank you!

Summer vacations

After three summers of substitute staff shortage and pandemic, Purple Door educators are able to take some proper vacation time this year. This is thanks to Jessica Stevens, our 2022 summer substitute! Beginning the week of July 4, Gillian, Kristin, and Natalie will be taking alternating weeks off throughout the summer, with Jessica covering. Please be sure to call Purple Door directly to communicate with staff that are working, rather than using text or Messenger messages to personal phones.

Holiday closure

Purple Door will be closed Friday, July 1 for Canada Day.

Sunscreen collection

We are putting out another call for the $5 sunscreen fee. If you have not paid this yet, please do so as soon as possible. You can add it to your next fee payment, or pay cash or debit/credit separately.

Happy Father’s Day

May Newsletter

May Birthdays

We would like to wish a Happy Birthday to:

Charlotte – May 17

Mason – May 24

Everlee – May 30

Zoey – May 30

We hope you all enjoy your special day!

Sunscreen

It is that time of year again when we have to start thinking about sun safety and the UV index. We are making our sunscreen collection and asking all families to give $5 per child towards sunscreen. You can pay separately or add it to your fee payment. Purple Door will purchase sunscreen for the season and keep a supply on hand. We use Banana Boat Kids or Banana Boat Baby. It is scent-free and we have not had reactions to this product over the years, even for children with sensitive skin. Please let us know if your child is sensitive or allergic to this product.

Parent-teacher meetings: May 31

We are offering virtual private meetings with parents regarding your child’s progress in our program on Tuesday, May 31, 2022. Please sign up for a meeting slot no later than Friday, May 20, 2022. Please let ECE staff know that you would like to participate in a meeting, and if two parents would like to be present, let us know if it will be one screen or two. The meetings will be held via Messenger Video Chat and you will be given a time that we will call you to discuss your child’s most recent progress report.

Holiday closure

Purple Door is closed Monday, May 23, 2022 for Victoria Day.

Toilet training tips

At Purple Door, we have aided in a lot of toilet training! Before beginning toilet training with your child, be sure they are ready. Readiness is not determined by age. Watch for signs such as pausing for a few seconds during play or an activity, or clutching at their diaper, showing they are aware when they are peeing or pooping in their diaper. Your child should be interested in going to the toilet or potty and not be asked to sit on the toilet against their will.

Before beginning toilet training, your child should be able to:

· Follow simple 1-2 step instructions

· Understand and use words like “pee”, “poop”, “toilet” or “potty”

· Keep a diaper or training pants dry for 1.5-2 hours

· Pull up and down a diaper/training pants and their clothing. Do not dress your child in clothing they cannot undo themselves (i.e. diaper shirts with snaps between legs, belts or ties on pants, or buckles on overalls)

· Go to the toilet/potty, sit for an appropriate amount of time, and get off the toilet/potty, and wash their hands

Scholastic books

Each month we post a link to the monthly Scholastic Canada digiflyer on our Purple Door Children’s Centre Facebook group. This is a quick, easy, and economical way to order quality books and have reading fun at home, or give as a lasting gift of literacy to others.
